Brief
Introduction and activities of the Department :
The entire library holdings have
been made
available in machine readable catalogue
since 2008; and the computerized
bibliographic information of the library holdings have also been
available for
users’ searching throughout the campus through Local Area Network
(intranet) using WebOPAC. Automated
circulation system using
barcode technology has been used since 1st December, 2008
which
provides easy and prompt service to the users. Library
has been providing lending and reprographic
services, Orientation Progammes for newly
admitted
students of all the Academic Departments used to be conducted every
academic
session.
Digitization of Mizoram University’s own documents and publications had been pursued for setting up of an ‘Institutional Repository’ and the same had been hosted on the intranet in May, 2011. The repository provides free access to all types of institutional research outputs within the campus network (Intranet).
Computerized Braille System for blind students had been successfully installed and operated since December 2011 in the Library.
Besides, implementation of advanced technology in the field of identification, security, tracking and automated handling of Library materials using Electro-magnetic and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Library management system in order to improve the efficiency of Library operations had been completed, and started using the system since 21st March 2012.
The work of appending existing CD/DVD contents along with the bibliographic record of the books, and making it available for the users to easily access the digital data contents from WebOPAC throughout the campus network (Intranet), had been completed in November 2013.
For enhancing security of the Library, 4 CCTVs had been installed in the vital locations of the building in November 2013, in order to monitor the activity of users as well as to help security of property counter.
A separate room for accessing and downloading of E-resources by the readers with 15 computers had been created in November 2013.
Power backup of 100 KW stand alone solar PV power plant had been installed for uninterrupted power supply in the beginning of the year 2013.
RFID Proximity Visitors Attendance System had been introduced and implemented since 28th September, 2015 to replace the manual hand written Visitor’s Registers kept in the Main gate and in Periodical section of Central Library.
Library upgraded its existing Library Management Software by integrating with an SMS & E-mail Alert System. The new system will send SMS & Email alert for every transaction to the users i.e. issue, return, renewal, etc of books with necessary information. For overdue books, reminder will be send to the user along with the fine amount. The system has been operating since 14th January, 2016.

Best Library User Award (Student & Teacher Categories) from
the
academic session 2014-2015.
Central Library earned appreciation of NAAC Peer team, November 2013 as ‘having good facilities, good maintenance and a beautiful library’ as well as ‘one of the best libraries not only in North-East India, but Eastern India’.

for Higher Education E-Resources, where resources from 2 Publishers are
available -4,603 and our own

has also been subscribing
IEEE All-Society Periodicals Package
(ASPP), providing access to the IEEE
core collection of engineering, electronics, and computer science
periodicals
since 2015-16.
3. Library membership: The total Library membership is 3,945 i.e. UG-634; PG Students-1,951; M.Phil-158; Ph.D scholars-645; Teachers-236; Guest Lecturers-116; Departmental Libraries-3; and Non-teaching staff-202.
4. Books Issued and Visitors: During this year, 47,281 books were borrowed by the users and had 24,783 visitors.

(a) User Awareness Programme: ‘One
day user
awareness programme on e-resources’ was conducted in collaboration
with Springer
Nature for teachers and Ph.D scholars on 23.03.2018
(b) Ek Bharat ShresthaBharat: As desired by
MHRD, Ek Bharat ShresthaBharat (One
India) programme was observed in Central Library on 31.10.2017.

Librarian delivered a speech on ‘Bihar and Mizoram’
states, and
relevant books and placards bearing significant characteristics of
Bihar and
